Инфинитив в английском языке или неопределенная форма глагола называет действие, не указывая ни лица, ни числа. Почти всегда инфинитив употребляется с частицей ТО, но в ряде случаев возможно употребление инфинитива без этой частицы.

Инфинитив, так же как герундий, может служить в предложении подлежащим, дополнением, определением и обстоятельством. В разговорном английском языке герундий в этом случае употребляется чаще. 

To swim is a good exercise.

Swimming is a good exercise.

Отрицательная форма инфинитива образуется с помощью частицы "not."

He decided not to do it.

2. Инфинитив с частицей ТО используется, чтобы выразить причину и ответить на вопрос "Почему?" В этом случае значение этой фразы близко к "in order to" или "so as to".

3. Инфинитив с частицей ТО используется с прилагательными после "IT", чтобы выразить мнение или суждение, сделать комментарий:

В этом случае применяется паттерн: 

subject + to be + adjective + (for/of someone) + to-infinitive + (rest of sentence)
